Animated shorts from the Netherlands are unique and remarkable products noted for their clever ingenuity and daring approaching to subject matter.

Dutch animation has developed into an outstanding art form and Dutch animators and their work have influenced animation around the world. Many animators began as visual artists; illustrators, painters or photographers. The work of a number of Dutch animators is now recognized worldwide for its excellence and over the years, Dutch animation films have received many national and international prizes including Academy Award nominations and Oscar.

'Barcode' is a road movie through an abstract virtual world. Travelling over and through landscapes the spectator is taken in a play of light and shade. Sometimes the light moves freely, then is collected, reflected or transformed. The shades lengthen and crawl together. Quick lamps make stroboscopic effects, race through curves and settle down. 6. BLACK THUNDER
A white horse and his cowboy are riding into an old Western town in the hot Utah desert. The locals return from a hanging and are looking for more trouble. A shoot-out seems inevitable, but … this film is in homage to the traditional western and to the horror movie, creating a whole new genre: the animated horror western comedy. 14. DAEDALUS’DAUGHTER
This programme is a poetic film that was inspired by the myth of Icarus and the beautiful and sensuous voice of Jennifer Larmore, the American Mezzo-soprano who also sings the score of the movie. In Daedalus’Daughter’ flying is the metaphor for the unattainable ideal: It was Daedalus’ son Icarus, who fell from the sky for trying to reach for the sun. Daedalus’Daughter’ is a duet for music and animation, a pas de deux in colours of the earth in which the sway of the animated movement and the warmth of Jennifer Larmore’s voice mingle for one brief sensuous and melancholy moment.

17. FRIEZE FRAME
Where animation film and oil paintings meet, animator Gerrit van Dijk in his entirely unique way brings life to static pictures. In one fluid movement he animates 39 paintings from the collection in the Frans Hals Museum. No more looking at the frozen images immortalized by the painter in his work of art, but at people and animals who served as models for the painting. Loving, teasing, dancing, joking we emerge from the masterpiece by Frans Hals and enter the world of Karel Appel. An improvisation by saxophonist Harrie Sparnaay on a theme from Russian composer Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures of an Exhibition’ forms the musical line along which the metamorphoses take place. 26. THE HORROR FROM HELL
‘The Horror from Hell’ was the winner of the 1998 Annecy International Animation Festival Prize for the Best Educational Film for its use of humour and its ability to teach in a non-pedagogic manner. The Horror from Hell’ is an “Instructional film” that conveys a serious message through wacky, slapstick, and cartoon comedy. It was commissioned by Pathe Cinemas BV to demonstrate to their patrons that a cleaner environment in the cinema makes the film experience more pleasant for everyone. Directed by Greg Lawson.

32. THE JOURNEY OF DRAGON
In 1560 Pieter Brueghel painted ‘The Struggle of Saint George and the Dragon’. Also in later years the dragon’s game was an important item of the carnival celebrations. A society in Breda, the Netherlands asked Ties Poeth to design a dragon for the annual carnival in Breda. He registered the process of the construction of the carnival-coach. ‘The Journey of a Dragon’ is his first documentary after several experimental films. Directed by Ties Poeth.

While something’s wrong at home, he gives vent to a deep, self-mocking feeling, representing his inner flame to change his situation and break out of his misery. Walhalla tells the story of three dead Vikings. Killed in a violent fight, they think they are going to Walhalla.
