AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES (DD100)
At the start of the new millennium, the speed of social change seems to be accelerating. Certainties of everyday life seem to be shifting, leaving us feeling less and less sure of the world around us. Who are we? Who can we trust? What do we know? This series uses geography, sociology, economics, politics, psychology and social policy to explore these questions of identity, nationality, globalization, power and knowledge.

1. THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS (DD100/03V)
How does society view, interact with and order disability? The Unusual Suspects explores the way society and science - both medical and social - have variously constructed disability as medical, natural and social and what implications this has for both disabled people and society as a whole. The programme concludes with a survey of current developments in genetic science - including cochlea implants, pregnancy screening and genetic manipulation - and an evaluation of the implications of these 'breakthroughs' for disability.

2. LIVING WITH RISK (DD100/04V)
This programme offers an insight into UK labour market relations in the last 50 years. Through a series of employment histories of individuals drawn from a variety of social backgrounds, ages and ethnicities, the programme explores a range of issues including employment experience and how employment affects identity. This reveals that employment history and experience is not homogenous: class, gender and ethnicity cut across the meaning of work. As well as surveying the past, the programme maps current employment trends, asking who the winners and losers are in the new world of work.

3. GLOBAL FANTASY II: THE IRRESISTIBLE SPREAD OF THE COMPUTER GAME? (DD100/05V)
This programme explores the world of Japanese and UK produced computer games; looking at examples of gaming culture, consumption, development and production within a global market. Focusing on contemporary popular games such as 'Pokemon', 'Tomb Raider' and 'Final Fantasy', the programme investigates evidence for national cultural differences in computer games in an increasingly global market.

4. MOTHER KNOWS BEST? (DD100/06V)
Using parenting as an illustrative example, this programme explores the production, distribution and consumption of knowledge. The programme examines two common issues facing parents, one old (the child who will not sleep) and one new (the possible side effects of the MMR "measles-mumps-rubella" vaccine). The programme considers issues relating specifically to child care - the agencies involved in the social construction of both motherhood and childhood - and more general issues of knowledge and knowing, including the decline of authority, the rise of new sources of knowledge and the relations, and conflicts between them.
