THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE (U210)
英語的過去、現在與未來
"The treatment of issues related to gender and minorities is exemplary." Peter Trudgill, University of Lausanne - External assessor.
This series provides an exploration of the development of English and its current use as an international language spoken by 1,000 million people around the world. They deal with such question as:
How and why has the language changed over time? How do varieties of English differ around the world? On what are ideas about good and bad English founded, and how valid are they? What makes language use into art? How do we learn English? How can we make sense of debates about the teaching of grammar in schools? English has become a dominant language internationally. How is it used to inform, persuade and influence? Does English as an international language contribute to greater international integration or is it bound up with cultural and linguistic imperialism?
英語已成為一種國際語言。本系列探索英語的發展和介紹這超過十億人口使用的語言怎樣隨著時間變化不斷地演進。

This programme is about accent - the British accent Received Pronunciation (RP). Although only spoken by a relatively small number of people, these people occupy powerful positions in English life and in the rest of the world. We look at the pronunciation features that characterize RP, at how people react to the RP accent and its speakers, and at how RP is changing.

3. ENGLISH ONLY IN AMERICA? (U210/03V)
美國只需要英語嗎?
Should English be the official language of America? More and more Americans think it should be. The increasing number of US Spanish speakers, along with speakers of other languages are seen by some Americans to pose a threat to their way of life. If only English is used for everything official, some believe the country will stay united. In this programme campaigning groups from Washington present their case for English only, while in California the case is argued for bilingual rights. The programme also covers the use of English in the workplace.

What does it mean to them and how do they reflect on it as they grow older? What did earlier generations think? We meet a range of people including professional writers, children and their parents, from Singapore and Wales, both of which have bilingual populations.

6. AN ENGLISH EDUCATION (U210/06V)
英語教學?
English-medium education is popular throughout the world, but it is not without its critics. This programme follows three families in the south Indian city of Bangalore, who have chosen to send their children to three very different kinds of English-medium schools, and also talks to critics of this kind of schooling. Bangalore has grown very rapidly and now less than a third of the population are speakers of the state language - Kannada. There has been a powerful pro-Kannada language movement since the 1970s, with Government Orders stating that no new English-medium schools would receive approval. The number of British-medium schools has continued to grow however, with many feeling that an English-medium education is a sign of better education and, therefore, helps when looking for jobs.

7. NEWS STORIES (U210/07V)
新聞故事
This investigation into the use of verbal and visual communication in television news reporting highlights the difference between news in the newspapers and on TV. We join a group of BBC trainees as they learn to write scripts for TV news broadcasts. The BBC staff insist on the serious nature of news reporting and feel that they have a responsibility to their viewers to record and state as accurately as possible what is happening in the world. We next look at extracts from a BBC TV comedy, The Day Today, which is used by the BBC for training its TV journalists because it demonstrates all the ways of showing news that they are being taught to avoid.

English is now the dominant language spoken by over a billion people and second language users now outnumber native speakers. This programme looks at the different contexts and countries in which the language dominates in education, pop music, advertising and the Internet.
