EYE ON... THE CARIBBEAN
This series celebrates the natural and cultural diversity of two contrasting islands. As a long time resident of Netherlands Antilles, Dos Winkel gives us a rare 'insider’s look'x at these colourful tropical worlds and introduces us to many of their larger-than-life characters.

1. BONAIRE - CORAL TREASURE
Situated just 20 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Bonaire is the least developed and least populated of the five islands of the Netherlands Antilles. And since the arrival in 1962 of Captain Don Stewart, the island has become renowned for its crystal clear waters and extraordinary array of marine life - boasting a biodiversity comparable only to that of a tropical rain forest.

Now in his 70s, Captain Don is one of the ‘great characters’ of the Caribbean. In his inimitable fashion he recounts his conversion from spear fisherman to conservationist. Dominique Serafini spent fifteen years as a working member of the Cousteau Team, and has spent his kife driven by two passions - the sea and his art. Dominique takes Dos and crew on a dive to the Windjammer - the perfectly conserved wreck of a three masted clipper sunk in 1912. It lies now at depth of 60 meters, beautifully encrusted in corals, transformed into a sunken cathedral. Dos then explores the mysterious world of the mangroves with biologist Kalli de Meyer. Having run the Bonaire Marine Park for ten years, kalli has been dubbed “the voice of the reef” The Bonaire Marine Park has become a model of its kind in the Caribbean and stands as a shining example of how island’s marine assets can be conserved while at the same time generating income from tourism.

2. SABA - THE UNSPOILED QUEEN
Verdant green with lush vegetation, Saba is an extinct volcano that seems to shoot out of the sea. Only five miles square at the base its peak rises to over 2,800 feet. First discovered by Columbus on his second voyage in 1493, the island constantly changed hands between the European powers for centuries until 1816, when it fell definitely in the hands of the Dutch.

Renowned conservationist Tom van’t Hof guides Dos and family through Saba’s many natural worlds, the fauna and vegetation changing dramatically with altitude. Above 2,700 ft the mysterious Elfin Forest begins. This mist enshrouded world is the home to the trembler and purple-throated humming-bird. The volcanic nature of the island also provides a dramatic underwaterscape for Dos as he explores the waters around Saba. As very little fishing is done here, tarpons and barracuda up to 8 feet long are common, as are sea turtles.

EYE ON... KENYA
This series celebrates the huge natural diversity of this planet by looking through the lens of wildlife photographer, Dos Winkel - whose work conjures up the richness of our natural and cultural heritage in all its grandur. Kenya is best known for its teeming wildlife and breathtaking panoramas, but it’s also home to over 50 different ethnic groups, each with their own traditons and languages. In this series, Dos winkel goes in search of Kenya’s indigenous people to find out how they are coping with the pressures to change.

1. LIVING WITH WILDLIFE
This first programme focuses on two of Kenya’s conservation hotspots: the game filled grasslands of the Maasai Mara and the verdant slopes of majestic Mount Kenya. Dos travels to the Maasai and meets a group of young Maasai warriors preparing for a major ceremony, known as the Eunoto. Dos gains a rare insight into their customs and learns of the struggle for a balance between people and wildlife being played out in the grasslands of the Maasai Mara.

On the slopes of Mount Kenya, Dos is confronted with Kenya’s most urgent conservation problems. Africa’s second highest mountain is not only a unique sanctuary for animals and plants, but also the most important water catchment area in Kenya. Together with Bongo Woodley, Chief Warden of Mount Kenya National Park, Dos joins a poaching patrol and discovers that fencing now offers perhaps the only immediate way for farmers and wildlife to coexist in areas like this.

2. LIVING ON THE EDGE
Dos and team travel into the heart of the Kaisut Desert, one of Kenya’s driest and most unforgiving regions, in search of the Rendile people. The Rendile are Kenya’s camel experts and masters of their fragile environment - staying alive by constantly keeping their herds on the move… Here Dos and family get a unique opportunity to attend a traditional Rendile wedding.

The team then mounts an expedition with pack camels into the country of the neighbouring Samburu. Dos discovers why some Samburu are adopting the use of camels to help them cope with the drought that is increasingly afflicting their savage yet beautiful home.

3. PEOPLE OF THE FAR NORTH
In this final episode Dos reaches the shores of Lake Turkana. There the team join Louise Leakey on a fossil finding expedition. There they get an insight into why this part of the world is often referred to as the cradle of mankind.

The team then travels to the border with Ethiopia where they contact the Dassanach people, one of the least known tribes of Kenya. Their lives have remained virtually unchanged for centuries, surviving as they do from fishing and crocodile hunting. The team manages to gain a unique insight into life on these deserted shores and the visit comes to a fitting climax with the spectacular celebrations of the upcoming Dimi festival.

EYE ON... PERU
This series focuses on indigenous peoples who have maintained a close living relationship with their land. As guardians of what are often fragile ecosystems, they help us rethink our attitudes to our natural world. Sustainable development - the new catch call for the future - has formed the basis of their cultures for centuries.

1. JUNGLE WORLDS
The best starting point for an exploration of Peru’s vast sea of green is Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. Dos travels deep into this jungle world of rivers, lakes and swamps under the guidance of Dario, an ex-hunter and tracker who has found a way to communicate with many of the forest creatures.

Dos then joins an expedition mounted by Biologist Stefan Austermuhle deep into the cloud forests of central Peru. They are the first to dive its rivers and pools…exploring its crystal clear waters and encountering a number of fish new to science. But the most exquisite of Peru’s jungle worlds is the Manu National Park one of the richest and diverse tropical rainforests in the world. Dos travels to Manu in search of the Machiguenga people who have lived in these forests for generations. At the community of Huacaria, the people are looking to bridge the traditional and modern worlds by developing a judicious mix of commercial and subsistence agriculture.

2. WATER WORLDS
This episode explores two of Peru’s unique water worlds: the coastal wonderland lining its 2,500 mile desert shore and the frigid waters of South America’s highest body of water - mysterious Lake Titicaca. Dos travels to the Paracas Peninsula, which despite receiving recent protection as a Marine National Park is still very much under pressure. Dos goes diving with a local fisherman, whose intimate knowledge of these marine waters is leading to the development of sustainable fishing practises for the area. They then journey north, along the most remote and dramatic shoreline of Peru, 100 miles from the nearest human settlement. To finish, Dos travels high into the Peruvian Alti Plano, to Lake Titicaca, a place of mystery and legend - reputedly the birthplace of the Inca civilisation. Here far from the usual tourist haunts, the team dives its icy waters, in search of a mysterious frog with unique aquatic habit - it lives permanently underwater, never surfacing to breathe.
