AFTER THE GENOME (S195/01V)
he three billion letters in our genetic code have been read and published, but there is still much speculation about what they mean. Will revelations from this 'book of life' cure cancer, or help us understand what makes us human? Those involved, including Sir John Sulston and sceptical geneticist Steve Jones, try to glean some meaning from the genetic code.

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE: THE EVIDENCE
Attempting to uncover the truth behind the world's most ancient medicines, this series challenges our views of who we are and how best to treat ourselves. The claims made for alternative medicines are often extraordinary. Many people believe that they are the most effective treatment for chronic diseases like Alzheimer's and back pain; some even propose them as frontline treatments for cancer and HIV. Globally, this is a 60 million dollar business but what are the facts? Are alternative medicines really effective?

1. ACUPUNCTURE
Starting in China, we see some powerful evidence that acupuncture works. The most astonishing is a scene in which doctors perform open heart surgery on a young woman - using acupuncture instead of a general anaesthetic. So what does western science make of these claims? We meet key scientists in the UK and the US who have put them to the test. And we discover that for most conditions and illnesses, acupuncture cannot be shown to work. But intriguingly, scientists have found a number of conditions relating to chronic pain in which they can be fairly certain acupuncture is having a powerful effect.

2. HERBS
This programme investigates the ancient practice of herbalism. We find that not only do herbs have potent healing powers but that some of them may also provide answers to medical conditions that continue to baffle modern science. We look at the distinct herbal traditions of a number of countries including South Africa, Germany and Britain. Each has their own particular plants and unique practices. But one claim underlies them all - herbs have remarkable properties that make them powerful medicines. In South Africa, we learn about a herb that is being hailed as a new weapon in the fight against HIV/AIDS. And we hear from patients and their carers who claim it is saving lives.

3. HEALING
Although there is no evidence that healers have any special powers, their patients do sometimes appear to recover. It is a mystery that we can finally solve only when we discover that each of us has a powerful self-healing mechanism that some people have found a way to manipulate. We explore this extraordinary human capacity and find the key to triggering it. Our journey begins in the UK at a rally given by world-famous spiritual healer Benny Hinn. Here we find dozens of people who claim to have been cured of a range of conditions from back pain to cancer. In the United States, we talk to a knee surgeon who has made an amazing discovery.

CELL CITY
All living beings are made up of tiny microscopic units called cells. Some, like primitive organisms found in ponds, consist simply of a single cell. Others, like humans, begin life as a single cell, but grow into a vast complex of many different cell types, with each cell performing a specialised function. While towns and cities vary greatly in size, no matter where they are in the world, they share many similar features. Likewise, despite the vast variety of life forms and cell types, different shapes and sizes, all cells have many features in common. This series concentrates on animal cells, but most of the same basic structures and organising principles apply equally well to cells in plants as they do to cells in humans. Travel from outer space on a journey of discovery, into the depths of a single cell.

1. CITY LIFE
A cell's function is similar to that of a city. The inter-relationship between cells is explored, and the analogy applied to gain a deeper understanding of cities. With its outer boundaries, power stations, factories, post offices, roads and communication networks, a biological cell is similar to a city in microcosm. 30 mins.

2. CITY WORKS
Likening the inner workings of cells to a city, this programme uses this fun yet robust analogy to investigate cell division and cancer research.

3. INNER CITY
A cell's function is similar to that of a city. With this in mind, the inter-relationship between cells is explored, and the analogy applied to gain a deeper understanding of diabetes, stem cell research and ageing. 30 mins.

4. CANCER PIONEERS
Unless we understand how cells work, we can never understand why they go wrong, and that means we will never properly understand disease such as cancer. Also, understanding basic cell processes will really help us tackle important human diseases. This programme looks at the landmark work of Sir Paul Nurse, Tim Hunt and Lee Hartwell - winners of the 2001 Nobel prize in medicine. 14 mins.
