From windmill to computer. Throughout its history, Dutch design has been austere and devoid of superfluous ornamentation. The nature of the raw material determined the point of departure. Glass, transparent and smooth, has always been a favorite. The household objects that illustrate this series are perhaps the most effective examples of the functionalism of Dutch designs.
1. HISTORY
The Industrial Revolution reached the Netherlands much later than in most other European countries. In this flat country, windmills served their purpose well until the electric motor made them obsolete. Mass production replaced handwork alienating artisans from industry. Today, as we'll see in this film, exotic materials and sophisticated electronics challenge new generations of designers.

2. DESIGN AS A PROCESS
The design processes always follow a set pattern whether creating city benches, telephone poles or twenty-five cent coins. In this segment, designers discuss the client's need, the needs of the various users and how conflicts of ideas are resolved.

3. HOUSE STYLE AND CORPORATE DESIGN
The style of a company or organization is reflected in everything from the look of its letterhead to its office decor to the design of its product and services offered. This programme compares the styles of Randstad, an employment service and the Groninger Art Museum designed by Italian architect Mendini.

4. INSTITUTIONAL DESIGN
Much care and talent goes into the design of passports, postage stamps, even into paving stones but not everyone is pleased with the results. Nevertheless certain institutional factors must prevail. We'll also look at world-famous Dutch postage stamp designs from 1920 onwards and we'll also examine the interior design and decoration of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

5. TECHNOLOGIES AND FORM
Mechanized production opened new areas for designers but set strict visual requirements. Amazingly, the machines themselves often inspired new styles and we see in this programme how repetition, precision and streamlining give products a technical, modern look.

6. CONSUMERISM
Rapid advances in technology and increasing affluence bring accelerated consumption. But we're also beginning to realize that money will not necessarily buy well being. The system can generate mass production but unless it can also deal with disposal of waste, the environment will suffer irreparable harm as outlined in this programme.
