DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS (T305)
This series is relevant to students studying telecommunications or data and computer communications. The series draws on examples from both mobile and fixed networks and topics include: protocols; network management and reliability; digital representation of sounds and images; routing, switching and signalling; coding and modulation and high-speed networks.

We move in the midst of a digital age, which is changing the way we talk. We expect new technologies to connect us across ever greater distances, to relay data with ever increasing speed. The way we talk is changing who we are - and we don't know how. This programme looks at Microsoft in 1997 gave away a stack of computers and switched a whole street in London (UK) on-line.

2. CYBERWAR (T305/02V)
As the global network of computers becomes the communication backbone of our society we become increasingly vulnerable - control the networks and you control the world. In future, might wars themselves be fought over lines of communication with software armies, jostling for control of nations? Information technology is the great leveller, the technology of cyberwar is sold by commerce and a single hacker can wield the same power as a nation state. In the future, we might be protected by white knight software - computer code which would track and neuter hostile software.

3. FIGHTING FOR SPACE (T305/03V)
In the hundred years since Marconi transmitted his first wireless message we have expanded our communications base many times over. Marconi's wireless communication allowed them to tell us about it first hand and we were able to see them do it. With radio wave technology now common place, the biggest problem is the overlapping of systems. Just as light from cities destroyed optical astronomy in urban areas, today the proliferation of mobile phones is causing radio pollution, which disrupts equipment surveying space for life. As mobile phone technology prepares to step into space, communicating directly with a web of satellites circling the earth, things can only get worse for the scientists.

4. NEVER MIND THE QUALITY? (T305/04V)
The worlds of television, computers and tele-communications are interweaving. There are new ways of making programmes, new ways of delivering them through digital technology. In a few years, television as we know it may cease to exist. The proliferation of channels being offered means that hundreds of channels are now available, including channels aimed at specialist interests. The potential of the multichannel age for direct selling is already being tested: Videonet is a video and shopping on demand service which comes down a phone line, meaning goods can be bought immediately via the television.

5. AFRICAN RENAISSANCE (T305/05V)
Jay Naidoo, Minister for Communications in the new South African government of National Unity has a vision: every household will have a postal, telephone and internet address. In a country where the end of apartheid found a third of the thirty million black people destitute, this is a revolutionary vision and the revolution may be coming in the shape of the mobile phone. But poverty is still the enemy. And so the South African government has promoted the invention of the phoneshop. Airtime is bought instead of phones and shipping containers have been adapted to be digital phone containers. These subsidised phones are shipped into townships and are made accessible to local people. They are funded by two mobile phone companies in return for the sole rights of mobile phone sales.

6. CYBERSOULS (T305/06V)
A revolution in communication technology is questioning where the boundaries of the body lie. When we can talk across continents and live in virtual realities we might be entering a new age where we will become one with technology - cybersouls emerging from human bodies that have become obsolete. Even without putting a finger to a computer we exist in digital space as names on databases, as numbers on files of information across the world. Unless we stay as connected as corporations or governments we could be missing out.

THE WEB STORY (M206/AIP)
Over one hundred million people around the globe are now using the World Wide Web, with three more people being connected every second. No other communication technology has ever grown so quickly. In this compelling series of three programmes, we explore what the future holds for the Web and its users.

1. TODAY (M206/AIP/01V)
In 1990, Englishman Tim Berners-Lee turned his dream into reality. He invented a way to make a world of information available to everyone - the World Wide Web. Hailed as one of the great success stories of the decade, the Web has opened up a vast array of opportunities for commerce, particularly for the big software companies who are now fighting for domination in the Web software market. In this programme we investigate the commercial take-over of the Web and ask whether Tim Berners-Lee can keep Web technology free from the control of a single company.

3. YESTERDAY (M206/AIP/03V)
Over the last thirty years a communication revolution has been taking place. The British and American pioneers of the information age have changed the world we now live in, through their invention of the Internet, electronic mail and, most recently, the World Wide Web. E-mail and Web publishing have made people aware that the Internet is a powerful way to share information, but not everyone is happy with this culture of free speech - least of all the politicians. This programme tells the story of the information-age pioneers and the technologies they developed, and reveals why, for better or for worse, the information network is here to stay.
