The programme is studio-based and focuses on the possibilities of maximising the benefits of gifts by making the most of the tax advantages and ensuring that the administration is up to the mark. The 2000 Budget brought with it some very useful changes to ensure that there were benefits both to the giver and to the receiver of gifts. It also relaxed the requirements for those gifts to qualify for tax benefits. Accountants need to be aware of the new arrangements, both to ensure that their clients are fully advised and to adopt audit procedures to identify any problems with administration. The programme limits itself to four types of gift arrangements to charities and discusses what each type of gift can offer, the conditions to be satisfied and the benefits now available.

No accountant wants or needs an Inland Revenue investigation into his clients’ affairs and the programme makes suggestions as to how an accountant can reduce the chances of an investigation being instigated. The programme gives a step-by-step guide through the investigation process and suggests actions, which should be taken by both the accountant and the client if it should happen that the clients’ affairs are opened for investigation. It also provides suggested points at which an accountant should consider whether he or she is able to continue the clients’ defence on their own or whether they need additional and more experienced help - suggestions as to the type of help available are also given.
