Jesus' Female Disciples: The New Evidence
The traditional story of the birth of Christianity is a male dominated affair - only men were priests and the disciples of Jesus. But now, Bible experts and historians Helen Bond and Joan Taylor lay out a striking alternative version of events, that sees women central to the origins of Christianity. But why has this pivotal role played by women disappeared from history? In a journey that takes them to ancient caves in Israel and catacombs in Italy, Helen and Joan call into question centuries of Christian thought. Were female disciples actually crucial to Jesus' mission?

Getting High for God
Religious communities in Utah and Brazil, both of which use drugs to access the spiritual world, provide some mind-bending and potentially life changing answers. This daring documentary sees Mawaan Rizwan join two religious communities – and ingest powerful hallucinogens – in the quest for spiritual enlightenment. Mawaan visits a Christian ‘Spiritist’ Church in Brazil and takes part in their ancient ceremony, which involves chanting, singing, drug-taking and (hopefully) an intense spiritual experience. Mawaan also joins the Native American Church in Utah, where the congregation use Peyote, a psychedelic drink, to commune with God. Will Mawaan find the answers he’s looking for or will he discover a darker side to spiritual enlightenment?

Sex and the West
Is a large swathe of Christianity out of step with the modern world? As society in general becomes more liberal, the Church seems more entrenched. This fascinating series explores how the religion's complex, explosive and often divisive ideas about sex, marriage and gender have their roots in an extraordinary story that began 2,000 years ago. From Mormons, Methodists and missionaries to the witch-hunts of the 16th century, the drag queens of 18th century London and the sexual revolution of the 1960s, it reveals how Christian views on sex and gender have never been fixed - they are in flux and they have been so right from the start. Even-handed, and without strident proclamation or condemnation, Sex and the West seeks to add historical context and knowledge to what is an increasingly fractured but relevant debate.
1. From Pleasure to Sin
Western society seems obsessed about sex and we never stop talking about it. The constant sexual chatter is what sets the West apart from other cultures who deem it to too rude to talk about. For over 2,000 year Christian thinkers have worried away about sex, trying to lay down the law on what’s right and what’s wrong when it comes to sex and sexuality: this endless debate has turned sex into a Western obsession. The trouble is, that Western Christianity has never been able to decide what to say about sex and churches tear themselves apart over contraception, homosexuality, the role of women and generations of sexual child abuse. Believe it or not the world is still steeped in Christian attitudes towards sex, early Western Christians turned it from a biological necessity into a vice, from a pleasure into a sin and we’ve been struggling with the fallout ever since.
2. Sexual Revolution
性革命
For the first thousand years of Christianity, Christians did not go to church to get married. Marriage was a civil contract between a man and a woman with, or without the churches involvement. In 1073 there was a new pope, Gregory the seventh and he had his own vision of strict Christian morality, and sex and marriage were at the heart of it. Huge societal changes at the time, lead kings and nobleman to realise there was more profit to be made through farming and trading. Land owners soon realised the way of escalating their wealth through the generations, was to leave their land to their eldest son, but there was often many claiming to be the legitimate heir. The issue of legitimacy was seen only to be able, to be resolved by one person, God.
3. Christianity Vs The West
In 1711 London finally completed its magnificent cathedral, St Paul’s. It was a monument to the wealth and power of the Christian church, but St Paul’s also symbolised a radical way of thinking that would gradually undermine Christianity’s power. The churches architect was Christopher Wren, a leading figure of the Enlightenment: a movement which used the rational powers of science and learning to banish what they saw as superstition and mindless obedience. Many church teachings came under attack, seen as oppressive reminders of barbarous medieval past. Many Enlightenment figures were Christians that loved to challenge the church and by questioning many doctrines, they helped to transform sexual attitudes and behaviour in the West. In the 18th century sex turned from a sin, into a world of sleaze and scandal.

Churches: How To Read Them
In Churches: How to Read Them, discover the secret code built into every British church. To our ancestors, the Christian message - captured in plaster, paint and stone - would have been as immediate as a picture book. Today, the key to unlocking that code has been lost. This authoritative BBC guide reveals not only the religious symbolism that imbues sacred spaces, but also the rich social history that has bound together Church and people for so many centuries. From stained glass windows to the magnificent - or simple - fabric of the buildings themselves, everything is steeped in significance.

Sex, Death and the Meaning of Life
Ideas about the soul and the afterlife, of sin and God's purpose have shaped human thinking for thousands of years. Religious rituals remain embedded in the major events of our lives.
In this thought-provoking series, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins asks what happens if we leave religion behind. He explores what reason and science might offer to inspire and guide our lives in religion's place. Can science bring understanding in the face of death, help us tell right from wrong, or reveal the meaning of life?

Richard Dawkins tackles death. He investigates what, in place of religion, science can tell us about death. He brings together the latest neuroscience, evolutionary and genetic theory to examine why we crave life after death, why we evolved to age and how the human genome is something like real immortality - traits inherited from our distant ancestors that we pass on to future generations.

The Common Lot
Light at the end of the tunnel, dear ones greeting us, a feeling of eternal well-being. More and more people who have returned from death’s door claim they have experienced a Near Death Experience (NDE). NDE refers to a broad range of personal experiences associated with impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations including detachment from the body; feelings of levitation; extreme fear; total serenity, security, or warmth; the experience of absolute dissolution; and the presence of a light.
Given their bizarre similarities with certain notions of the Christian faith, the Catholic Church is in the witness box. What do these NDEs mean? Do they confirm or contradict the Christian faith? Should we take a fresh look at our notions of judgement, hell, purgatory and paradise? Witnesses, scientists and clerics give their views and lift a corner of the veil.

Catholics
In a new series of three episodes, we go behind the headlines
that have come to define the Catholic Church to explore what
it is actually like to be Catholic in Britain today. Each of the three
episodes is an intimate portrait of a different Catholic world, revealing
Catholicism to be a rich but complex identity and observing how this
identity shapes people's lives.

Episode 1. Priests
神父
As the Catholic priesthood struggles to recover from the scandal of child abuse, numbers of men applying to join have fallen greatly. Just 19 men were ordained in England and Wales in 2010. In this first episode, we meet the men who still feel themselves called to this role, including funk band roadie turned first-year student, Rob Hunt. A cradle Catholic, Rob ignored his faith for years before deciding his life was veering off course. With little education, he thought he had as much chance of becoming a priest as becoming an astronaut. Today, surrounded by boxsets of The Sweeney, he is adapting to seminary life. The episode follows the seminarians through a timetable which ranges from Biblical Greek to lessons on how to live a celibate life. Everything builds towards priestly ordination when the seminarians believe they will be fundamentally altered as human beings, only then able to celebrate the Eucharist and perform the act that is central to Catholic life, the transformation of bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Episode 2 - Children
兒童
This episode focuses on the children of St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School in Chipping, Lancashire. The tiny rural school has 33 pupils, six of whom are preparing to make their First Holy Communion. Viewers will observe the essence of Catholicism being distilled into young children. Encouraged to celebrate the riches of the natural world and to remember those less fortunate than themselves, the children are also required to reflect on Christ's brutal death and resurrection. Occasionally, this graphic story of suffering might seem to threaten the children's infectious charm and innocence.
Episode 3 - Women
婦女
This final episode looks at Catholic women about how Catholicism has shaped their lives. With remarkable behind-the-scenes access to Westminster Cathedral, this is a moving and intimate film meets with the female staff, volunteers and congregation of the cathedral. Rose is second-in-charge of the cathedral's sacristy, preparing the altar for six daily masses and making sure the priests have all they need. It's like running a busy train station. A convert, Rose is the consummate 'handmaid of the Lord' for whom Catholicism is an anchor in life. Jennie, on the other hand, is a cradle Catholic who feels her education by nuns was repressive, with an unspoken emphasis on sex - and especially abstaining from it. She feels her Catholic 'indoctrination' was a cross for her generation to bear. Despite that she staffs the cathedral's information desk once a week and feels her Catholicism is a valued part of her identity, having developed over the years into an appreciation of the spirit of faith more than the letter of the Church.
