Attenborough's Wonder of Eggs
David Attenborough has a passion for birds' eggs. These remarkable structures nurture new life, protecting it from the outside world at the same time as allowing it to breathe. Equator From The Air
The equator is home to a remarkable range of ecosystems and species. But world-leading cameraman Gordon Buchanan knows there's another story to tell. The region between the tropics is home to 40% of the world's population. It's rich in resources, and the perfect place to grow cash crops on a grand scale. As a result, this string of abundant habitats is blighted by poaching, deforestation and flooding. It's where modern dilemmas come into sharp focus. And the best vantage point to monitor these changes? From above.

The world's cities are growing at a faster rate than any other habitat on the planet. And while most of us imagine them to be concrete jungles devoid of nature, for animals of all shapes and sizes they are just a new habitat filled with new and surprising opportunity. With similar needs to humans, these wild animals face similar challenges, and like us, if they play their cards right, they can find everything they need in the city. With the natural world shrinking, and our urban centres continuing to grow, adapting to life in the city has never been more important. This first episode of examines what it takes for these wild residents to thrive in the newest and fastest changing habitat on the planet.

2. Commuters
This episode explores whether the secret to an animal's success in this fast-changing world is to keep one foot in the wild and one in the city, becoming a wild commuter. Leaving the wilderness, they must overcome the unique challenges that the urban world throws at them to benefit from the opportunities on offer. Many animals displaced from their natural habitat are now using their wild skill set in the city to help fulfil their needs. Could this be the beginning of a new and very modern migration?

Nature’s Wonderlands: Islands of Evolution
Because of their isolated eco-systems, islands provide nature’s clearest illustration of how evolution works. It was by studying life on the Galapagos islands that Darwin’s theory of evolution was born. More than 150 years later, Nature’s Wonderlands goes to three islands to meet the unique species that illustrate his ideas. From carnivorous caterpillars and flowers that bloom once every 20 years, to the remains of pygmy hippos and gorilla-sized lemurs, this series profiles the modern-day residents of these habitats, as well as their fossilised forebears. This fascinating study explains how life on Earth has evolved, and asks how we can protect it against the growing threat of mass extinction.

1. Hawaii - A New Eden
In this first episode, Professor Richard Fortey is on Hawaii to investigate how life colonises a newly born island. The most remote island group in the world, by some estimates only one new species successfully colonised Hawaii every 35,000 years - yet the Hawaiian Islands teem with a great diversity of life. In search of the evolutionary secrets of how one species becomes many, Prof. Fortey encounters beautiful honeycreeper birds whose evolution rivals that of the Darwin’s famous finches; carnivorous caterpillars who now can’t eat leaves; and giant silversword plants that thrive in parched volcanic soil at 10,000 feet up.

From beautiful Indri lemurs, toxic frogs, and the cat-like giant mongoose called the fossa, to evolutionary oddities like the giraffe-necked weevil and the otherworldly aye-aye, Prof. Fortey uncovers the secrets of the evolutionary niche - examining how, given millions of years, animals and plants can adapt to fill almost any opportunity they find.

In this third and final instalment, Professor Richard Fortey travels to Madeira to examine what happens to a volcanic island as it nears the end of its life-cycle and starts sinking back into the sea. Here, in the island’s laurasilva forest, he examines the remains of an ancient forest that once carpeted all of Europe; island lizards that live to be four times older than their mainland counterparts, and the largest wolf spider in Europe. Masters of Bees
Ever since it appeared nearly 80 million years ago, the bee has occupied a special place in evolution. Untiring worker, essential to the development of vegetables, it is one of the foremost species maintaining our equilibrium on Earth. Mankind is fascinated by its perfect organization and its incredible reproduction process. And the relationship between people and bees throughout the world is equally plural. In a world where the climate is changing and biodiversity is gradually disappearing under the effects of “human activity”, the bee is in danger and so is our relationship with it.

In New Zealand, Maori beekeepers cover hundreds of thousands of hectares daily in order to care for their bees, which pollinate and conserve their sacred, community lands.

In both countries, beekeepers are fighting daily to preserve the purity of the local species of bees, the Carniolian bee in Slovenia and the black bee in the Cevennes. For the locals, they are the guardians of a precious heritage.

But they are not the only beneficiaries: major predators, lovers of honey, are also numerous. Humans have had to adapt to the ingenuity of the many honey thieves to protect the nectar and sometimes even team up with certain predators in order to harvest it.

Spirituality is often the key to understanding Central Thailand’s harmonious relationship with nature. America’s High Country is the land of grizzly bears and giant trees, of frigid winters and scorching summers, of tough ranchers and gold-rush fever. From the Rockies to the Sierra Nevada, in this land of extreme seasons, survival demands endurance. It’s all about taking what you need to stay alive by whatever means, from parasitic plants to thieving black bears, and tenacious pikas to battling bison.

1. Animal Frankensteins
Hybrids can be bizarre and they can be deadly. We look at two hybrid animals that owe their existence to human interference – the pizzly bear (a cross between a polar bear and grizzly), which has come into being because of global warming, and the killer bee brought into existence because of the transfer of African bees to South America.

2. Finding the Way
Some animals have an extraordinary ability to find their way. The dung beetle, an insect revered by ancient Egyptians, uses the sun, the moon and even the Milky Way to move its prized ball of dung in the right direction. Pigeons are often considered feeble birdbrains, but they have incredible memories that can recall several complex travel routes with amazing accuracy and they even use manmade roads and hedgerows to find the quickest way home.

3. Extreme Babies
The giant panda gives birth to the smallest baby of any mammal and has to care for and protect it for many months. The kiwi lays one of the largest eggs in the bird world, which produces a very well developed chick. Why don’t pandas give birth to more developed, robust young and why do kiwis produce a single egg that is a quarter of its body mass and almost too big to lay?

4. Curious Counters
Can animals count? This is a question that has intrigued and fooled investigators for a long time. Just over a hundred years ago, a German horse called Hans was declared a mathematical genius but all was not as it seemed. And strangely, some bamboos around the world flower exactly at the same no matter where they are – are they counting down the years?

5. Incredible Shells
David Attenborough investigates two shells that have proved to be winners in evolution: the bird’s shell and the hard shell of the tortoise. The ostrich egg is so strong it’s possible for a person to stand on it without it breaking – how does the chick break out of this fortress? The evolution of the tortoise shell was for a long time a mystery and this bony box offers a lot more than just protection.

6. Ferocious Fighters
The Siamese Fighting Fish is so aggressive it will fight its own reflection until it is exhausted. Recent research shows that the fighting behaviour varies and depends on the personality of the fish! Male kangaroos were once pitted against humans in the boxing ring – the most impressive male kangaroos are solid blocks of muscle with a kick that can kill. Why do they fight and what skills must a winner have?

1. Impossible Feats
It is said that fleas can jump the equivalent to us leaping over St. Paul’s Cathedral and it is famously quoted that cheetahs can run at speeds of 70 miles per hour. But are these claims really true? The discovery of the world most elastic natural protein in insects and the development of a hi-tech tracking collar have help reveal the true facts. So can these creatures really achieve what should be physically impossible?

2. Curious Minds
Orangutans are clever tool users but strangely such skills remained undiscovered for centuries. They were considered as just clever mimics until discovery in remote Sumatran swamps revealed their true potential. Crows are clever birds that can solve problems and they too make surprisingly sophisticated tools. How have the curious minds of these two animals helped them become so inventive?

3. Expandable Bodies
The bodies of some animals stretch and shrink in extraordinary ways. The anaconda can swallow prey twice its own body size and then go for over a year without eating. The camel’s curious hump can almost double in weight giving it the energy to travel huge distances across deserts. What is the secret behind such expandable bodies?

3. Young Wrinklies
Aging and eternal youth seem to fascinate us. In this episode, David Attenborough encounters two examples where curious bodies and extreme lifestyles may unlock the secrets of the ageing process and longevity. For both of these animals wrinkly skins are not a sign of age, they help them survive! The first was thought to be a mythological creature when it arrived in Europe with striking features that proved to be key to it's long survival, while the second has almost supernatural biology and can literally puts it's life on hold to avoid the stresses of life.

4. The Narwhal's Tusk
The Narwhal is a mysterious creature of the high Arctic that has been the inspiration for tales of unicorns. David Attenborough looks at how the striking appearance of the spiral tooth inspired art. The reason why it has only one tusk and why it is spiral is still something of a conundrum. Two-tusked narwhals are occasionally discovered giving us insight into its evolutionary past.

14. Strange Parents
Animals are usually either male or female and behave in a way that is characteristic of their gender. But in nature there are curious exceptions. Female hyenas look and behave like males, and male seahorses actually get pregnant and give birth. Why have these two animals swapped their sexual identities?

Great Barrier Reef
Stretching a full 2000 kilometres in length and made up of 3000 individual reef systems and hundreds of islands, Australia's Great Barrier Reef is breathtakingly beautiful. Given world heritage status in 1981 it is one of the wonders of the natural world. This programme offers a definitive guide to the secrets of the reef - how it was created, how it works, the intricate relationships between its inhabitants and how climate change and other factors might shape its future. Using the latest specialist filming and visual techniques, the series captures the magic of the reef as it has never been seen before.

1. Nature's Miracle
The first film explores the complex structure of the coral reef itself and the wildlife that lives on it. Within this magical world we reveal how the amazing reef creatures compete and co-operate - from deadly fishhunting snails to sharks that can walk on land, fighting corals and parrot fish that spin sleeping bags every night. Remote cameras, cutting edge underwater macro and digital time-lapse photography, have captured many sequences have never been filmed before, providing completely fresh perspectives on this extraordinary natural wonder.

2. Reef to Rainforest
Only 7% of the Great Barrier Reef is coral reef. The rest is a variety of interconnected habitats including the world's oldest jungle, hundreds of islands, and mysterious deep water gardens - all full of amazing wildlife. A giant deep-water lagoon connects all of these, and many of the creatures that live in it are impossibly weird - from giant hammerhead sharks to the bizarre 'pearl fish' that lives its life up a sea cucumber's bottom. The connections between all these environments mean that, not only do they depend on each other but, without them the coral reef itself would not survive.

3. Reef & Beyond
The Great Barrier Reef is vitally linked to the rest of the planet in many ways. Creatures travel for thousands of miles to visit in spectacular numbers, including tiger sharks, great whales, seabirds and the largest green turtle gathering on the planet. Weather systems travelling from across the Pacific also affect the whole reef, including mighty cyclones that bring destruction and chaos to the coral and the creatures that live on it. And it is weather patterns and climate change on a global scale that are likely to shape the future of the Great Barrier Reef and all its wildlife.

1. Defying Gravity
In Africa, a caracal's 'rocket-propelled' launch enables it to catch birds in flight. In the Australian outback, a kangaroo's hop is key to finding water in a desert of over a million square kilometres. On an English farm, an insect's ultimate ejector seat accelerates it to 700G with help from a clutch in its crotch. And high above the jungles of Borneo, a leaping snake's unique shape allows it to glide, even without wings.

2. Masters of the Sky
Meet Nature's 'Top Guns', who push the laws of physics to the edge to meet the varied challenges of flight. The heavyweight whooper swan uses a water runway to gain the speed it needs to take off, whilst the peregrine falcon relies on pop-up feather spoilers to hit 200 miles an hour. In Ecuador, the programme reveals how hummingbirds amazing flight control is the root of their high-octane lifestyle whilst in New Zealand, the albatross's nose holds the surprising key to long distance flights. Also this episode, sparrow-hawks turn on a six-pence and cranes use teamwork to cross entire continents.

3. Crowded Skies

Should We Close Our Zoos?
For thousands of years we have taken animals out of the wilderness and put them in caged enclosures for our own amusement. However, with our contemporary understanding about the complexity of animal behaviour, and the fact that most of us can see animals in their natural environment on TV, can we really justify keeping them in cages? In this film Liz Bonnin, a PhD student at the Zoological Society of London, visits zoos and speaks to scientists across the globe. From captive breeding programmes and conservation, to education and welfare, Liz evaluates the role zoos have to play in the 21st century.

Planet Earth II
A decade ago, Planet Earth redefined natural history filmmaking, giving us the ultimate portrait of life on Earth. Ten years on, the unprecedented advances in both filming technology and our understanding of the natural world means we can once again reveal our planet from a completely new perspective. In one of the most ambitious landmark series, Planet Earth II allows us to experience the world from the viewpoint of the animals themselves. Travelling through jungles, deserts, mountains, islands, grasslands and cities, this series explores the unique characteristics of Earth’s most iconic habitats and the extraordinary ways animals survive within them.

1. Islands
Remote islands offer sanctuary for some of the planet's strangest and rarest creatures. The rare pygmy three-toed sloth enjoys a peaceful existence on an idyllic Caribbean island, while nesting albatross thrive in predator-free isolation. But island life always comes at a cost. On the Galapagos Islands, young marine iguana must escape an onslaught of deadly racer snakes the moment they hatch from the sand. On the sub-Antarctic island of Zavodovski, life gets more extreme still. Every day, one and a half million penguins risk being battered against the rocks by fierce waves as they try to get on and off the island.

2. Mountains
山脈
The great mountain ranges are some of the planet's most spectacular landscapes, but they are unforgiving places to live in, and only a few animals have what it takes to live at extreme altitude. Mountain animals are amongst the most elusive in the world, and this film provides unique and intimate glimpses into their secretive lives. Witness the moment four snow leopards come together when a mother and cub become trapped between two rival males. Join grizzly bears as they dance against trees to rub off their winter fur and soar with golden eagles hunting amongst Europe's snow-capped peaks.

3. Jungles
叢林
Jungles provide the richest habitats on the planet - mysterious worlds of high drama where extraordinary animals attempt to survive in the most competitive place on earth. Flooded forests are home to caiman-hunting jaguars and strange dolphins that swim amongst the tree tops, while in the dense underworld, ninja frogs fight off wasps and flying dragons soar between trees. Acrobatic indri leap through the forests of Madagascar, while the jungle night conceals strange fungi and glow-in-the-dark creatures never filmed before.

4. Deserts
The world's deserts are lands of extremes that force animals to come up with ingenious ways of coping with hostile conditions, giving rise to the most incredible survival stories on earth. A pride of desert lions are so hungry they risk hunting a giraffe several times their size, while male sandgrouse fly 120 miles each day to the nearest waterhole and dice with death to collect water for their chicks. Filmed for the first time, a tiny bat does battle with one of the world's deadliest scorpions, and in Madagascar, a locust swarm of biblical proportions is seen as never before.

5. Grasslands
草原
Grasslands cover one quarter of all land and support the vast gatherings of wildlife, but to survive here animals must endure the most hostile seasonal changes on the planet. From Asia's bizarre-looking saiga antelope to the giant anteaters of Brazil, grassland animals have adapted in extraordinary ways to cope with these extremes. In the flooded Okavango, lions take on formidable buffalo in epic battles, on the savannah bee-eaters take advantage of elephants to help catch insects and, on the freezing northern tundra, caribou embark on great migrations shadowed by hungry Arctic wolves.

6. Cities
城市
Cities are growing at a faster rate than any other habitat on Earth. They may seem an unlikely place for animals to thrive, but they can be a world of surprising opportunity. Leopards prowl the streets of Mumbai, peregrine falcons hunt amongst New York's skyscrapers, and a million starlings perform spectacular aerial dances over Rome. In Jodhpur, langurs are revered as religious deities and in Harar, locals live in harmony with wild hyenas. Many animals, however, struggle to cope in the urban jungle. As the architects of this environment, can humans choose to build cities that are homes for both them and wildlife?

1. From Pole To Pole
This episode looks at our planet as a whole and considers the key factors that have shaped its natural history. Without freshwater there is no life on the land, while the sun dominates the lives of all animals and plants on Earth and defines their habitats. The most enchanting illustration of the sun’s hold on life takes place in the Arctic spring.

3. Fresh Water
淡水
Just three per cent of the Planet’s water is fresh water and it is our most precious resource. Where it flows or falls it controls the distribution of all terrestrial life. This episode follows the descent of rivers from their mountain sources to the sea and showcases the unique and dramatic wildlife found within its unexplored waters.

4. Caves

5. Deserts
When astronauts peer down on Planet Earth, the one environment they all notice are the deserts, which make up a staggering 30% of the land’s surface. From space they look empty and lifeless. A closer look reveals a very different
picture. Deserts are united by their lack of rain, yet they are the most varied of our planet’s ecosystems.

6. Ice Worlds
Ice Worlds is a journey to the polar extremes of our planet, where for most of the year the Arctic and Antarctic are locked in ice. As the sun abandons one pole and journeys to the other, these frozen worlds undergo the most extreme seasonal transformation on the planet - from the total darkness and numbing temperatures of the polar winter to the midnight sun of the summer, when the sun never sets.

7. Great Plains
大平原
The vast open wildernesses of African savannah, Asian steppe, Arctic tundra and North American prairie are the great plains of the planet. Together they cover more than a quarter of the land on Earth and one living thing is at their heart, grass. This humble plant feeds the greatest gatherings of wildlife found anywhere on Earth.

8. Jungles
森林
Jungles cover roughly three per cent of our planet, yet contain a staggering 50 per cent of the world’s species. Located around the warm, sunny equatorial zone, complete with constant daylight, they are the most productive habitats on earth. Beautiful floating aerial shots introduce the world’s most spectacular forest vistas and high-definition cameras enable unprecedented views of the species that live on the dark jungle floor.

9. Shallow Seas
In Shallow Seas, the newly discovered coral reefs in tropical Indonesia reveal that they are one of the richest in the world. They are home to fantasy-like creatures - such as the head-butting pygmy seahorse, the flashing ‘electric’ clam and bands of 30-strong sea snakes which have never been filmed before as they the hunt in packs, using cunning strategy.

10. Seasonal Forests
From the evergreen forests of the frozen North to the deciduous dry forests of the Equator, Seasonal Forests reveals the greatest woodlands on earth. At the edge of the Arctic, the Taiga forest is a silent world of stunted conifers cloaked in snow and ice. The trees may be small but filming from helicopter and satellite reveal its true scale. It’s a belt that circles the globe, broken only by ocean, and containing a third of all trees on Earth.

11. Ocean Deep
深海
Oceans cover two thirds of the planet, yet largely remain unexplored. For animals that dwell on the surface or within the deepest abyss, it’s finding food and conserving energy that is paramount. Planet Earth travels the world to reveal the extraordinary lengths life takes in its bid to survive this immense and barren realm.

David Attenborough offers his own personal take on the mystery and discovery, obsession and scientific revelation surrounding these elusive birds. He himself has spent a lifetime filming their displays - many for the first time - and researching these birds both in their remote forest homes and in the museums and collections of Europe. He reveals the passion that birds of paradise have brought about in so many human hearts, from collectors and painters to wildlife cameramen. He uncovers the true science behind their extraordinary lives, revealing that, far from being icons of religious virtuosity, the evolution of their beauty has in fact been driven by sex. And in a final modern twist, David travels to the desert of Qatar, to a state of the art facility which houses the largest breeding group of these birds in the world - a Qatari Sheikh's very own private collection.

24 Hours on Earth
The sun creates the daily rhythm for life on earth, hour by hour its exact position is critical. For every animal, each day is packed with both danger and opportunity. Some hunt in the blazing midday heat, others in the darkness of night. Animals have evolved astonishing strategies to exploit these key moments in the cycle of our planet. 24 Hours on Earth follows the huge highs and desperate lows of their daily struggle for survival.

1. Day
白晝
The changing position of the sun in the sky affects the behaviour of animals and plants across our planet. From the moment it rises, animals are waiting, ready to take advantage of the opportunities that the sun creates. A quirky chameleon uses solar power to survive, while a family of lemurs get a morning heat fix. But, as the day progresses and the sun climbs higher in the sky, becoming more powerful, animals must also react as it pushes them toward moments of crisis.

2. Night
As the sun sets and its great heat and light are extinguished, a night-time world wakes, full of characters who have carved a niche in the darkness. Dusk sees three million wrinkled lipped bats swirl out of their cave to feast on nocturnal insects. A sea dragon courts a female in the dying light of the Australian reef. He must convince her he’s the one before dark when predators come out in force. And as darkness takes hold, a pride of lions decide to go hunting. Their powerful night vision should give them the upper hand over their prey but will a full moon spoil their plans?

The Hunt
From the executive producer of Planet Earth and Frozen Planet comes a stunning new series that explores the dramatic world of predation as never before. The contests between predators and prey are the most critical events in nature. This series takes an intimate look at the remarkable strategies of hunters and, in some cases, the hunted, exploring the challenges animals face and the tactics they employ.

1. The Hardest Challenge
The contests between predators and prey are the most dramatic events in nature. The Hardest Challenge reveals the extraordinary range of techniques predators use to catch their prey - from a leopard using all its powers of stealth to stalk impala in broad daylight to wild dogs, whose tactic is to wear down their prey over long distances; from Nile crocodiles, the planet's most patient predators, to killer whales who use teamwork and intelligence to take on humpback whales. But even with these finely tuned strategies, the outcome is far from certain. Surprisingly, most predators fail most of the time.

2. In the Grip of the Seasons
In the Grip of the Seasons looks at the challenges of hunting in the Arctic, the most seasonal place on Earth. To a predator, seasonal change is a problem. It means that all the parameters of the hunt – the conditions, the strategies, the prey - change too. The only option for the Arctic's top predators, the wolf, the Arctic fox and the polar bear, is to continually adapt to their changing world, exploiting the good times and enduring the bad.

3. Hide and Seek
Hide and Seek follows tigers, harpy eagles, chimpanzees, army ants and other predators as they rise to the challenge of hunting within the forest - a dense, confusing, three-dimensional world, one in which even finding prey is a maddening task. The prize for succeeding at nature's great game of hide-and-seek is one worth winning. Forests cover one third of the land surface, and concealed within are over half of the species on Earth.

4. Hunger at Sea
Hunger at Sea follows blue whales, sharks, sea lions, frigatebirds, dolphins and albatrosses to reveal the strategies they use to hunt for prey in the big blue. The open ocean is an immense wilderness that covers more than half the surface of our planet, yet for the most part it's a watery desert, largely devoid of life. Predators face an endless search to find and catch food, yet these great tracts of ocean are home to some of the most remarkable hunters on the planet.

5. Nowhere to Hide
The open arenas of grassland and desert make up half of all land on our planet. In these exposed habitats, predators like cheetahs, bald eagles and lions can usually see their prey. But it works both ways: their prey can see them too. With nothing but open vistas, the element of surprise is hard-won, and predators must make their own opportunities.

6. Race Against Time
The coast is the dynamic border between land and sea; powered by the tides and thrashed by waves, this is a world of continuous change. Opportunities never last long here, so hunters are always in a race against time. The coast is the only place on the planet where predators from air, land and sea come together. Dolphins that leave the safety of the sea to fish, walking octopuses, ingenious monkeys, fishing wolves and the greatest gathering of feeding humpback whales come to the coast to hunt. For all, timing is everything.

7. Living with Predators
The final episode of the series visits the frontline of the conflict with the world's top predators, meeting the scientists fighting to save them. Crossing five continents and combining landmark natural history footage with real-life human drama, it checks the pulse of the earth's iconic animals, including lions, tigers, polar bears and blue whales. With three-quarters of the planet's carnivores now in decline, can people find ways to live with predators before they disappear forever?

From China to South America, in passing through the Sahara, caravan routes have been taken over by mechanized transport. Now camelids, camels, dromedaries and llamas, must be reconverted, to continue bringing life to the most arid regions of the world. They must support the millions of people who live there, and thus avoid a fatal exodus towards the outskirts of megacities.

Going beyond the outdated image that often accompanies them, we visit 14 countries to explore these camelids - with or without humps ; to meet the men and women, farmers, entrepreneurs and researchers, who innovate and mobilize to create new industries, and thus allow the camelid family, symbol of adaption, resistance and economy, to play a major role in the modern world.

1. The Princes with 2 humps
They're camels, they have 2 humps, and they can resist just about anything: arid deserts, extreme cold, extreme heat, salt water. For 1,500 years, they enjoyed their heyday on the Silk Road, from the orient to the occident. Some have even remained wild, even in the cruelest desert of the world.

2. The Superdromedaries of the Desert
Dromedaries have a hump. For 4,000 years they allowed nomadic tribes to live in a very hostile environment. They are the ships of the desert. Saddle animals, pack animals, the dromedary provides man with its meat, milk, skin...

South Pacific
This landmark series explores the sheer scale and majesty of the largest ocean on Earth, the isolation of its islands, the extraordinary journeys wildlife and humans have gone through to reach these specks of land, and what happened to both after their arrival.

1. Ocean of Islands
Their extraordinary isolation has created some of the most curious, surprising and precarious examples of life found anywhere on Earth; from giant crabs that tear open coconuts, to flesh-eating caterpillars that impale their prey on dagger-like claws. Human culture is different, too. The men of Pentecost Island celebrate their annual harvest by leaping from tall wooden scaffolds, with only forest vines to break their fall. And on the tiny island of Anuta, possibly the most remote community of people on the planet, the locals survive entirely on what they can grow and catch.

2. Castaways
They may be the most isolated in the world, but every one of the region's 20,000 islands has been colonised. This is the story of the ultimate castaways - from saltwater crocodiles and giant eels to crested iguanas - who have reached islands thousands of miles apart. The voyages of the South Pacific's first people, the Polynesians, were no less remarkable. Their journeys were some of the greatest acts of navigation ever undertaken.

3. Endless Blue
A large part of the remote, blue wilderness of the South Pacific is a marine desert. Many animals that live in the ocean, among them sharks, whales and turtles, must go to extraordinary lengths to survive. Tiger sharks travel hundreds of miles to feast on fledging albatross chicks and, every year, sperm whales journey from one side of the South Pacific to the other in their search of food and mates.

4. Ocean of Volcanoes
Witness the birth, growth and death of an island in the greatest ocean on Earth. Millions of years are condensed into an hour revealing unforgettable images of an erupting underwater volcano; rivers of lava exploding below the waves; roads and houses buried by molten rivers of rock. From these violent beginnings emerge coral reefs of unparalleled richness, supporting large groups of grey reef sharks and giant manta rays.

5. Strange Islands
Flightless parrots, burrowing bats, giant skinks and kangaroos in trees - on the isolated islands of the South Pacific, the wildlife has evolved in extraordinary ways. But island living can carry a high price, for when new species arrive, all hell breaks loose. And there lies a puzzle: why do animals perfectly adapted to island life simply give up the ghost?

6. Fragile Paradise
The South Pacific is still relatively healthy and teeming with fish, but it is a fragile paradise. International fishing fleets are taking a serious toll on the sharks, albatross and tuna, and there are other insidious threats to these bountiful seas. This episode looks at what is being done to preserve the ocean and its wildlife.

1. The Journey
旅程
David Tennant narrates an insight into this most intriguing and comical of birds, beginning with three different species' journeys to reach their breeding grounds. Emperor penguins cross a treacherous frozen sea, and rockhoppers brave stormy seas before they come ashore and face a daunting assault up a 300ft cliff, where they are vulnerable to predators. Meanwhile, the tropical humboldts have to evade sea lions, dodge vampire bats and battle sea birds before they can lay their eggs in the desert. All the while, their every move is being secretly filmed by hidden spy technology, including robotic penguins with cameras for eyes.

The fourth instalment shows how Southern Africa is influenced by two very different ocean currents. The warm Agulhas Current generates rainfall in Mozambique's interior, where butterflies gather on the summit of Mount Mabu to court and breed. The cold Benguela Current influences the Western Cape, where little rain falls. The intense heat makes incubating eggs a difficult prospect for African penguins. In spring, as Namaqualand is transformed into a desert garden, the drama of a monkey beetle's love life plays out in a single flower. Great white sharks and a 15 metre Bryde's whale are filmed in the rich feeding grounds of the Atlantic. Eye to Eye reveals how the opening sequence, documenting the first few minutes of a green turtle hatchling's life, was constructed.

5. Sahara
The penultimate episode opens in the cedar forests of the Atlas Mountains, where Barbary macaques have become isolated from other primates by the expanding Sahara. Aerial photography shows the Sahara is a landscape dominated by rock. Animals featured include Grevy's zebra, addax and naked mole rats, each found on the desert's fringes. Two million barn swallows are forced to cross the Sahara on their migrations, congregating at a poisoned oasis to feed on flies. The last remaining freshwater pools are home to stranded desert crocodiles, filmed hunting tilapia fish. Macro photography reveals the struggles of dung beetles and silver ants, the latter able to survive exposure to the brutal midday sun thanks to their reflective body coating. Eye to Eye shows how an 18-month time lapse sequence of Libya's sand dunes was filmed.

6. The Future
The theme of the final programme is environmental issues affecting Africa's wildlife, including poaching, habitat loss, climate change and human population growth. We profile the work of conservationists and scientists across the continent, drawing attention to projects which are helping to protect threatened species such as the black rhino, mountain gorilla and gelada. We visit a Maasai tribe to feature a project which is helping to reduce humanlion conflict, an underpass used by elephants to move between feeding grounds and a sea turtle rehabilitation centre. A civil war ravaged Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, but concerted efforts are now being made to restore the whole ecosystem. Eye to Eye follows Attenborough on his Africa shoot, culminating in an encounter with a blind baby rhino.

2. Understanging The Natural World
David Attenborough reviews the most exciting scientific discoveries that have transformed our view of life on earth during his lifetime. How and where did life first begin? How do continents move? How do animals communicate? And why do they behave the way they do? In a story of individual passions, dedication and ingenious insights he shares his memories of the scientists and the breakthroughs that helped shape his own career. He also recalls some of his more hair-raising attempts to bring new science to a television audience - by standing in the shadow of an erupting volcano as lumps of hot lava crashed around him, by being charged by a group of armed New Guinean tribesmen and the extraordinary sight of chimps hunting monkeys, captured on camera for the first time by Attenborough and his team.

3. Our Fragile Planet
Sir David Attenborough reflects on the dramatic impact that humankind has had on the natural world within his own lifetime. He tells the surprising and deeply personal story of the changes he has seen, of the pioneering conservationists with who he has worked - and of the global revolution in attitudes towards nature that has taken place within the last six decades. In a journey that takes him from the London Zoo to the jungles of Borneo, Attenborough reveals what inspired him to become a conservationist. He remembers classic encounters with mountain gorillas, blue whales and the giant tortoise, Lonesome George. These are all characters that have helped to change public attitudes to the natural world.

1. Jungle
叢林
This film transports us around the emerald band that encircles our planet – our jungles. And begins by tackling one of the biggest puzzles about the world’s rainforests: why do these places have such a bewildering variety of life, far greater than any other habitat on Earth? The quest begins in Panama, where more varieties of bird have been recorded in a single day, than anywhere else on the planet. We then travel to Borneo to see how some of the largest animals of the jungle, the orang-utan and the forest elephant, are crucial in protecting the biodiversity of the rainforests. Finally, we travel to the Amazon to witness a truly amazing web of relationships, centred around the Brazil nut tree.

2. Grassland
草原
In this episode, we travel to the savannahs of Kenya; the grasslands of Australia; and the Cerrado of Brazil to witness how one of our most important ecosystems works – grasslands. In Kenya we witness the surprisingly important role that rhinos play in making the grasslands fit for antelope. In the Brazilian Cerrado, we reveal how maned wolves get by on a low nitrogen diet, with the help of an odd dietary supplement – a fruit. In Australia, we encounter a weird cast of mini grassland characters, like bandicoots, rock wallabies and quolls. Finally, we return to East Africa to reveal how one extraordinary part of the ecosystem works – one built around the acacia tree.

3. Seasonal Forest
Seasonal forests are special. Their ecosystems have to cope with drastic change twice a year, in Spring and Autumn. Not only do the individual inhabitants have to deal with that change, but the entire ecosystem has to transform itself at exactly the same time – and it can only do this if all the animals work in perfect synchronicity. This entire episode is spent in the vast seasonal forests of North America, over the course of a year. Episode hi-lights include footage of flying squirrels leaping from tree to tree in the fall, how a lynx survives the winter, the crucial effect that caterpillars have on the forest canopy, and the importance to the forest of a bear’s fishing exploits.

4. Waterworlds
水世界
In this, the final episode, we follow water on a journey that will take us across the world – from the remote mountain streams, via luscious wetlands and swamps, to coral reefs and the deep ocean. We begin high in the mountains of Iceland, in the North Atlantic. We then travel across the world to South America, to the world’s greatest wetland – The Pantanal. We then travel to the Sunderbans – a vast mangrove swamp at the mouth of the Ganges in Bangladesh. We then head out to sea, to the coral reefs of the Maldives, where we investigate the puzzle of where reefs get their food. Finally, we sail far out into the deep ocean to reveal how ocean currents rescue much of the lost nutrients that end up on the seabed.
