From mining and exploration, to an exclusive look deep inside a top-security Swiss bank-vault, this is the epic, untold story of gold’s 6000 year history. With help from leading industry insiders, Grant Williams uncovers how gold became central to the modern global finance system.

Episode 1
Grant Williams looks at gold’s role throughout the history of mankind. We will find out how and why gold became money and trace its path through the rise and fall of empires and civilizations. Grant will explain how gold has held its purchasing power like no other asset for millennia and examine the gold standard to discover why years of countries running up debts that could never be paid back have made it imperative that the money you have in your wallet no longer be backed by the precious metal. Finally, Grant will trace the path gold takes from the moment a stake is pushed into the ground to the moment refined, molten gold is poured and cast into bars and coins - journeying deep underground to see how gold is mined, and into one of the world’s biggest refineries to witness the process that turns it from a few flecks in tonnes of rock to jewellery.

Episode 2
Grant looks at the gold markets and explains why “the gold price” is different to “the price of gold”. We will look at how gold trades in traditional financial centres such as London and New York and travel East to Dubai, to see how gold is bought and sold in the real world – away from computer screens. Grant will also examine some of the many conspiracy theories surrounding gold and ask the question; is the gold price manipulated and, if so, by who and why. Finally, we will look to the future and ask the all-important question; will gold’s place at the centre of the financial universe continue and, if so, how will it change as governments, faced with mountainous debt piles, slowly tighten the noose of financial repression around their citizen’s necks.

This series places the crash in its social context, analysing how it was reported by the media and how it has changed the lives of so many.

The Love of Money features exclusive interviews with many of the major players, key commentators, international leaders and finance ministers. This is the story of how the crash was caused, how it developed and what the long-term consequences will be.
