Neanderthals: Meet Your Ancestors
Meet the Neanderthals, but not as we know them - smarter, faster and more like us than we ever imagined. Hollywood star Andy Serkis teams up with expert palaeontologists and uses groundbreaking science, emotional storytelling and award-winning animation to discover the true nature of our ancient ancestors, bringing them to life like never before. The team build fully realistic and accurate 3D performance-capture avatars of real Neanderthals for the first time, revealing how scientific discoveries are changing perceptions of the Neanderthals and helping us tackle modern disease.

Episode 1
This first programme in a two-part series investigates what Neanderthals looked like and how they lived in their Ice Age world. It turns out that almost everything we thought we knew about them is wrong. They weren't hunched, grunting, knuckle-dragging ape-men at all. In reality they were faster, smarter, better looking - and much more like us than we ever thought. Our guide is Ella Al-Shamahi, a young, British, rising star in Neanderthal research, with an unusual side-line as a stand-up comic She enlists the skills of Andy Serkis, the global movie star and master of performance capture, best known as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and Caesar in Planet of the Apes.

Episode 2
In this episode, Ella Al-Shamahi explores the fate of the Neanderthals - asking why they became extinct, and discovering how they live on inside of us today. The programme starts in the caves of Gibraltar, which may have been the last place the Neanderthals survived. Discoveries here have shown the Neanderthals lived a good life - feasting on seafood and wild game. These were a people who were supremely well adapted to their environment. But about 40,000 years ago they disappeared. Why? One of the reasons might have been that they lost out in a physical showdown with modern humans. Ella investigates one of the world's oldest murder mysteries.

3. The Mystery of Stonehenge
Stonehenge is a 5,000 year-old mystery. Despite years of investigation, archaeologists can't agree about why or how this stunning and mysterious monument was built. Some argue the world famous monument, with its careful alignment to the midwinter solstice, was a giant calendar or observatory. Others insist it was cathedral to some unknown gods. One widely held theory is that Stonehenge had spiritual significance for healing sick pilgrims. But now the discovery and dating of an ancient mass-grave at the Stonehenge site is overturning all of these assumptions and suggesting that this iconic site began as a Neolithic graveyard.

4. The Headless Gladiators of York
It was one of grizzliest finds in Roman archaeology. The decapitated remains of over 80 battle scarred skeletons, all buried in the same plot, in the same ritualistic manner nearly two thousand years ago. So who were these people? The macabre discovery took place in 2004 when archaeologists were excavating a plot of land in the Historic city of York in North East England. Within days of unearthing the first skeleton, the body count had reached double figures - and kept rising.

8. Garden of Eden
Traditionally, Eden has been seen as a mythological place, an abstract paradise. Genesis is intriguingly specific about its location and archaeologists now believe they may have zeroed in on the place which inspired Eden - the Fertile Crescent, particularly the area which is now in the south of modern day Turkey. For Dr Elaine Padilla, this area matches perfectly the description of where the Garden of Eden was. Using modern satellite imagery a clear contender emerges. Is this the real location which inspired the Eden narrative?

Ramesse II was one of the greatest pharaohs to rule Egypt. His reign, beginning in 1279 BC, saw stability, military success and a building programme unmatched since the construction of the Pyramids a thousand years before. But for Egyptologists, one great mystery hung over his reign. His capital city, Pi-Ramesses, the ‘House of Ramesses’, was known to be a large and magnificent city. But over the passage of time, it seemed to have completely vanished from history. The chief clue about the city’s location came from an ancient papyrus, stating that it sat on the easternmost branch of the Nile Delta.

In 1922, in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, the final resting place of Ancient Pharaohs for almost 500 years, Howard Carter made the most momentous discovery in the history of archaeology: the tomb of King Tutankhamun. But just as the king’s tomb has astounded the world, it has also deeply puzzled experts. Funerary treasures appear to have once belonged to someone else… a woman. And upon entering the tomb, there is a right hand turn, typical not for a man’s tomb… but a woman’s. Archaeologists and Egyptologists have long sought to solve these enduring mysteries. With the very latest in digital technology, high-resolution 3D scans have revealed the possibility of secret doorways in Tutankhamun’s tomb, invisible to the naked eye.

In 2014 historian Margarita Torres discovered two Arabic parchments hidden in an Egyptian library. The documents record “The Cup of the Messiah” travelling from Jerusalem to Spain in the year 1055 as a gift to King Ferdinand of Leon. Examining an ornate chalice in Leon that once belonged to King Ferdinand’s daughter, archaeologist Julian Henderson reveals that hidden behind the medieval gold embellishment is a simple onyx cup. Margarita Torres argues that this onyx cup is the one held by Jesus. Torres finds evidence to support her theory in a medieval painting of the Last Supper commissioned by King Ferdinand’s daughter.

1. Come Together
Archaeologist and historian Richard Miles explores the roots of one of the most profound innovations in the human story - civilisation - in the first episode of an epic series that runs from the creation of the first cities in Mesopotamia some 6,000 years ago, to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Starting in Uruk, the 'mother of all cities', in southern Iraq, Richard travels to Syria, Egypt, Anatolia and Greece, tracing the birth and development of technology and culture.

2. The Age of Iron
Archaeologist and historian Richard Miles looks at the winners, losers and survivors of the great Bronze Age collapse, a regional catastrophe that wiped out the hard-won achievements of civilisation in the eastern Mediterranean about 3,000 years ago. In the new age of iron, civilisation would re-emerge, tempered in the flames of conflict, tougher and more resilient than ever before.

3. The Greek Things
Richard Miles explores the power and the paradox of the 'Greek Thing' - a blossoming in art, philosophy and science that went hand in hand with political discord, social injustice and endless war. He paints a fascinating picture of the internal and external pressures that fuelled this unique political and social experiment, one that would pioneer many of the political systems that we still live with today, from oligarchy to tyranny, from totalitarianism to democracy.

4. Return of The King
In Richard Miles's epic story of civilization, there have been plenty of examples of the great men of history, but none came close to the legend of Alexander of Macedon, known to us as 'the Great'. Uniting the fractious Greek city-states, he led them on a crusade against the old enemy, Persia, and in little more than a decade created an empire that stretched from Egypt in the west to Afghanistan in the east. But it was Alexander's successors, the Hellenistic Kings, who had to make sense of the legacy of this charismatic adventurer. By knuckling down to the hard graft of politics, taxation and public works, they created something far more enduring than a mere legend - they built a civilization. Richard traces Alexander's battle-scarred route through Turkey, Syria and Lebanon to Egypt and ultimately to the western Punjab, Pakistan, where he discovers fascinating traces of a city where Greek west and Buddhist east were united in an intriguing new way.

5. The Republic of Virtue
How did an insignificant cluster of Latin hill villages on the edge of the civilised world become the greatest empire the world has known? In the fifth programme of the series, archaeologist and historian Richard Miles examines the phenomenon of the Roman Republic, from its fratricidal mythical beginnings, with the legend of Romulus and Remus, to the all too real violence of its end, dragged to destruction by war lords like Pompey the Great and Julius Caesar. Travelling to Sicily and North Africa, Richard tells the story of Rome's century-long struggle for dominance with the other great regional power, Carthage. It was a struggle that would end with the total destruction of this formidable enemy and the transformation of landlubber Rome into a seapower, and the Republic into an Empire. But with no-one left to beat, the only enemy that Rome had left was itself.

6. City of Man, City of God
Richard Miles explores the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, which at the height of its power, extended the benefits of its civilisation to a staggering 60 million subjects and citizens, from Hadrian's Wall to the banks of the Euphrates. The archaeologist and historian also learns how the expansion of Christianity filled a gap left by the Roman multi-god belief system, eventually leading to the instalment of Constantine as the first Christian emperor.

1. The Search for Tutankhamun
Tutankhamun vanished from history in 1324 BC following his hurried burial and the erasure of his name from all monuments. In the winter of 1898 Carter is at the temples of Deir el Bahri recording wall reliefs threatened by a freak storm when he is thrown from his horse and makes a discovery in the sand. Retired Boston lawyer Theodore M. Davis funds Carter's excavation of Queen Hatshepsut's tomb but it is found to be empty and Carter deprived of further funding is reduced to selling his paintings to tourists on the street.

2. The Curse of Tutankhamun

In 1922 Carter goes to the Egyptian Antiquities Service in Cairo to announce his discovery but disagrees with Director Pierre Lacau over the clearance and cataloguing of the contents. The discovery revealed a dark time in the history of Egypt and the death of its boy king. Carter assembles an international team of experts to commence the work under the unwelcome scrutiny of Lacau's inspector and the western press. Canarvon's cavalier attitude to the finds he considers his property starts to infuriate both Carter and Lacau.

Belzoni, arriving back in Cairo, is informed by Salt that only the head is to be sent to the British Museum while the rest of the antiquities he has collected are to be kept at the consulate. 5. The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone
The young Champollion, encouraged to develop his gift for languages by his elder brother, becomes obsessed with deciphering hieroglyphs as a means to telling the age of the world and revenging France against the British who had confiscated the stone in 1801. When Alexander the Great had conquered Egypt he had fuelled local resentment by bringing in a Greek speaking elite to rule. Their descendant Ptolemy V had commissioned a series of stones written in Greek, common Egyptian and hieroglyphs for temples across the land to extol his virtues and underline his claim to the throne.

6. The Secrets of the Hieroglyphs
Champollion is determined to travel to Egypt to prove his theory but poor and jobless he is reduced to buying up whatever scraps of papyrus he can find and this obsession alienates his wife. The Dendera zodiac purchased by the French King Charles X threatens to challenge the biblical chronologies of church scholars, as it is believed by some to date to before the Great Flood of 2349 BC. Champollion is called in to confirm Sacy's dating of the antiquity to around 2000 BC; he disputes Sacy's dating but not Church authorities by dating it to some 2,000 years later than that during the Roman period.

The Man Who Discovered Egypt
This is the story of one of Britain's greatest archaeologists, Flinders Petrie, an extraordinary man whose meticulous excavations revolutionised archaeological techniques worldwide and brought new understanding to Egypt's past. A maverick and eccentric genius with an insatiable appetite for science, chemistry and mathematics, Petrie's lasting legacy came through his relentless and inspired study of Egypt. He was the genius who solved the mathematical secrets of the Great Pyramid of Giza, and his field reports are still the starting point for any modern day research. In this fascinating biographical film, presenter Chris Naunton, director of the Egypt Exploration Society, follows in Petrie's footsteps, travelling to the key sites of his discoveries in Egypt and Israel. Naunton draws on Petrie's extensive correspondence, work journals and photographic archive to chart the achievements of a remarkable man.
