The Placebo Effect
安慰劑效應
The placebo effect has long enjoyed a notorious reputation. To attribute a cure to the placebo effect, was to consider, with a touch of contempt, that the illness was the product of the mental state of a hypochondriac. If he invented his illness, he could invent his cure. Now, in contradiction to these theories, scientific studies carried out over recent decades show that the placebo effect can result in physiological changes that are both observable and quantifiable. By means of a rigorous investigation this film aims to shed fresh light on a powerful phenomenon that is associated with every medical act, in order to lift the veil on part of its mystery and begin to explore our formidable power for self-healing.

Returns of The Black Death
黑死病的回歸
The Black Death had such a devastating effect on society that it precipitated the crumbling of the old feudal European medieval order and ushered in the modern world. But what actually caused the Black Death - and how many people died - is still a mystery. In Return of the Black Death we see exactly why this disease was the biggest killer in history and learn about what it can teach us about pandemics to come. Contemporary accounts tell how the Black Death killed rich and poor, old and young alike; how victims suffered from painful boils, bleeding from the ears and black spots. The world has seen nothing like it, before or since. Now, in Return of the Black Death, we learn how a new investigation of recently unearthed skeletons from a long-lost plague cemetery discovered beneath the streets of London could settle the hottest debate in history once and for all.

The End of Ageing
不老之謎
Do you want to stop ageing? Do you want to live forever? Can science help you cheat death? In this pioneering documentary, Professor Rose Anne Kenny takes us through the science and the consequences of living longer lives. Imagine for a moment that old age became a thing of the past. Today, for better or for worse, it would appear that eternal life may soon be a reality. Some scientists are forecasting that the only way many humans will die is if they are shot or run over by a bus. The programme unveils what is happening in age prevention, shows how we can lengthen our own life spans and explains how some scientists now believe they are on the way to finding the Elixir of Life. Such power over life itself poses many profound questions: what impact is it going to have on our societies? What preparations should our governments be making for an ever-ageing population? Do people really want to live longer and suffer the inevitable weakening of their capacities? And is it morally right to transcend human fallibility and assume the role of God?
