The Beauty of Anatomy
Experimental, visceral, progressive - from the Venus of Willendorf, thought to be over 27,000 years old, through to Marc Quinn's modern self-portraits rendered in blood, the human body has always been one of art's central themes. But it is only with art and science combined that man has been able to fully understand and illustrate what lies beneath our skin. Tracing the rich history of this intimate relationship, this series explores how the advances of science transformed art, charting man's growing understanding of anatomy through the works that recorded and reflected it. Celebrating the great and the gruesome, the first-class and the foolish, The Beauty of Anatomy offers a considered and illuminating insight into a fascinating subject.

Episode 1
In this episode, Adam Rutherford looks at the work of second century anatomist of the Roman Empire, Claudius Galen. Galen used first hand experience to describe his anatomical observations in writing so detailed that later Persian translations included illustrations. After the fall of Constantinople, classical works influenced Renaissance thinkers and artists like Leonardo da Vinci, who also performed dissections to discover how the human body works. Following Galen's evidence based investigation, Andreas Vesalius performed public dissections in Padua, noting in detailed illustrations and descriptions the human skeleton, muscles, nerves, organ and brain. His illustrations were classically posed before a landscape, showing a body in motion.

Episode 2
In episode two, we explore the relationship of art and anatomical illustration while referring to the artist Rembrandt, the brothers William and John Hunter and Henry Gray, of the well-known Gray's Anatomy. As anatomists used dissections to discover the truth about the human body, illustrators worked with them to create anatomically accurate drawings to be used as a teaching tool for medical students and surgeons. Anatomical art also found its way into galleries visited by art patrons in Rembrandt's Amsterdam. We follow the demand for first hand experience from Galen and Vesalius as anatomists leave behind the classical ideal and seek more accurate depictions of what they saw.

Schama on Rembrandt: Masterpieces of The Late Years
For art historian Simon Schama, Rembrandt is the greatest artist of all time. In this beautiful film, Schama, one of the world's leading experts on Rembrandt, assesses the Dutch master's final works as he faced the challenges of old age. In his last years leading up to his death in 1669, Rembrandt was to find a whole new artistic language to express the pleasures and pains of growing old. Far from diminishing as he aged, his creativity gathered new energy in the final years of his life. Rembrandt's twilight years were turbulent - plagued by illness, poverty and bereavement. But exquisite beauty was borne from this misery, and, despite at the time being dismissed as substandard, grotesque even, the artist's late works were full of passion, innovation and deep self-reflection.

The Face of Britain
Simon Schama explores the history of British portraiture, revealing the stories behind some of the most powerful images in British art. In collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery in London, Schama examines the five ways in which this unique art-form has been used by both subject and artist - as a statement of power, a declaration of love, to promote fame, to capture ordinary people and to offer insight into the artists themselves.

1. The Face of Power
Simon Schama explores the eternal power of portraiture. Before we can walk, before we can talk, we become readers of faces, and throughout our lives face reading helps us to navigate the world. This primal engagement with the face makes portraiture one of the most compelling forms of art. Beginning with an exploration of how a portrait, commissioned to celebrate Winston Churchill's 80th birthday, ended in disaster for both artist and sitter, Schama discovers how portraits can involve a battle for control and - from the destruction of the faces of Christ and the Virgin during the Reformation, to Elizabeth I's fabulous feats of image making - demonstrates the importance of portraiture in fostering loyalty.

2. Faces of the People
Simon Schama looks at the rogue strain of British portraiture, made up of artists who have plunged into the crowd and given us the faces of the people. While most portraits have been of the great and the good who pay to be flattered, this film looks at artists who have taken all of humanity as their subject. Starting with the captivating portraits of street photographer Charlie Phillips, who captured the world behind the headlines in 1960s Notting Hill, Schama explores how every face has its own story to tell.

3. The Face of Fame
Simon Schama looks at portraits of the famous and investigates what the celebrated faces of Britain's past and present tell us about our national character. From images of our first national hero - the pirate Francis Drake - to iconic photographs of Princess Diana, he explores the popular craving for larger than life characters to populate our national story.

4. The Look of Love
Simon Schama explores how love portraits allow us to fulfil our craving to keep the ones we love close to us. By fixing their faces in time, we can defy separation, distance, time, even death. Beginning with the extraordinary story of Sir Kenelm Digby's attempts to bring his beloved wife Venetia back to life through a series of breathtaking portraits, the film explores the images at the centre of some of our most compelling love stories - the portrait miniatures that were instrumental in the love affair between the Prince of Wales and Maria Fitzherbert, and Thomas Gainsborough's portrait of his daughters that reveals the power of art made for love not money.

5. The Face in the Mirror
In this film, Simon Schama explores the complex motivations behind some of our most intriguing self-portraits, looking at what they say about both the creative minds of the artists who produced them and the human condition. From Tracy Emin's bed, a relic of our confessional age, to Lucien Freud's searing examinations of his ageing body, the film explores how all self-portraits stand on a knife-edge between self-indulgence and self-scrutiny.
